ABOUT THE ARTIST

My interests are rather wide-ranging, but as an overview I look for visual rhythms and connections between disparate elements.

Objects & Creatures

From time to time I return to still-life work, as a blend of sensuality and play. It is always enjoyable to paint a thing that's right in front of you, and usually I pose actual objects in the studio alongside the imaginary ones.

Water and Stone

Elemental: Weather Paintings

The landscape and weather works move between perception and memory. Although I sketch during my travels, the final work involves reflection after the fact.  My work is a process of building a language for the emotional impact of place and weather and season:

  • deconstructing an experience or a feeling, and then reconstructing it through the artwork.

  • ultimately, conveying an emotion or experience for the viewer.

Expressionist Works

Sometimes the hues and textures in a single rock say more than the most detailed rendering of an entire forest. Images of landscape and weather can often be condensed into expressions of shape and colour, inviting the viewer to slow down and contemplate. By bringing attention to things that may go unnoticed or unappreciated, art may have the power to create new ways of thinking.

Art, whether through creating it or through teaching it, can change the way we look at this world.

Background Note: I studied at Bealart (London, Ontario) and the Dundas Valley School of Art (Ontario),with a lot of self-teaching thrown in.  Continuing Education never stops.
I concentrated on watercolour techniques from 1975 to 1995; past works in both watercolour and colour pencil can be viewed in my Flickr galleries.

Recently the focus has been on acrylics; and the past few years have also led me into some new work in water-mixable oils. Most recently, I have also returned to watercolours with a refreshed perspective.

As an active member of the West Toronto Artists in Toronto, Canada, I exhibit my latest work in the annual Studio Tour and our other events through the year.

I also built their current website, and continue as webmaster.
