Kathryn Naylor

The paintings here have been loosely classified as either Interiors or Exteriors.

They're all connected with my real surroundings, past and present: for example, I lived in the tropics at one time & memories continue to influence my work. Presently, many of the Exterior paintings are inspired by hiking trips in various parts of Canada. In the Interiors gallery, material for the "Full Colour Monochrome" work comes from travels through my neighborhood dollar stores.

In a way, they all explore landscapes, whether wild or domestic. These are the strange places between seasons, and often the strange places between the world outside and the one within – for example, the point where a still life becomes a landscape of its own. I'm drawn by the sensuality of so-called ordinary objects, also the limits and possibilities of visual reality: improbable beauty, unexpected humour, unforeseeable danger.
They're all postcards from the world in a grain of sand.
